Car Magnets for your PTA and PTO

Google “PTA and PTO Fundraising Ideas” and you get the usual suggestions… car washes, selling chocolate bars, selling magazine subscriptions, etc. All of these ideas, and more, should be part of your fundraising efforts. Branded merchandise sales (customized with your full color school mascot) are also a great source of revenue. Some examples of branded merchandise are

These customized goodies, printed with your school mascot, tend to be very popular as fundraising items and your school can make some serious money selling them to parents, faculty, local business leaders, and the population at large. An additional benefit to raising money is that they provide a little bit of advertising, or “awareness”. T-shirts and baseball caps can generate quite a bit of exposure, but these items tend to only be worn on weekends (unless your work’s Casual Friday allows for this type of attire!). And then after a few months, the T-shirt ends up in the rag-basket and is only used to wax the car.

First, always use a high quality T-shirt (you should only use the best T-shirts from known suppliers such as Hanes, Gildan, etc.), otherwise you are going to need to handle a lot of quality complaints beginning a few weeks after the fundraiser. Doing a quick internet search for pricing, I have found that several of the larger on-line custom T-shirt companies will charge you about $13.50 per shirt (with a one color front logo and a full color larger logo on the back) for 250 shirts in various sizes. How much do you think you could sell each T-shirt for? Would you pay $25 for a T-shirt? Probably not. $20? Maybe. $15? You’re getting warmer, but a $15 each, you are only making about a buck and a half per shirt. Plus, you’ll be shelling out $3,375 up front for those shirts. Sounds like a lot of risk for only $375 profit (at a $15 sales price).

On the other hand, 250 fully customized car magnets from ARC Marketing will only cost $2.00 each (fully customized with your team logo) and you can sell them $6 to $10 each. Let’s assume that your parents and faculty are very involved with supporting your school and you sell them for $10 each. This makes selling T-Shirts seem like an exercise in futility.

Designing a powerful, effective car magnet is not difficult, but not everyone can do it! Let the experts at ARC Marketing help.

Which do you think would make a more effective car magnet…

  1. A simple centered logo, with one or two colors, with just a few words above and below the logo.
  2. A simple centered logo and lots of words to get your message out there
  3. Intricate detailed logo, with lots of colors, and lots of words to get your message out there

Actually, the answer is #1 (most of the time!). Although all of these magnets would cost the same (we do not charge more for extra colors, nor do we charge for the time our artists spend working on your design) so if intricate and detailed is what you want… go for it.

If you think about the nature of a car magnet, then a simple design might be the most effective. Remember that most people are going to see your magnet on a moving car. That moving car could be going 65 mph. if your car is standing still, your magnet is still going to be viewed from several car lengths away. When you take this into consideration, then #1 looks like the winner.

Sometimes, your school name just cannot be abbreviated and the message you want to convey cannot be shortened (the more words you use, the smaller the letters will be). Sometimes the logo you have to work with is just a very detailed piece of artwork. Sometimes your mission statement is so critical to your magnet that it needs to be included, no matter what. Well, in that situation, we encourage you to go for it. Even these detailed, wordy magnets get read. They just need to be on a parked car. If that car is in a parking lot at the mall, or at a football game, hundreds of people will be walking past it and noticing it. OK, so now #2 or #3 is looking like the winner.

High School Cross Country Fundraising Ideas

Let’s give a shout-out to one of the less recognized sports; High School Cross Country. These kids train and perform far from the huge crowds associated with High School Football and Basketball. They run around tracks in empty stadiums, they run through the forests, over hills, through valleys.

Without an attendance base like the football team enjoys, there is very little revenue coming in. And like most High School Sports, the funding is just not there like it was in the past.

Like most sports, the Cross Country Teams have booster clubs, created and staffed by the parents. Their job is not only to bring awareness to the Cross Country Team, but to help raise money to offset the costs associated with this sport.

There is a post on the internet by a Cross Country Booster Club (actually there are several and they all talk about the same expenses, so I assume most XC Teams have similar expenses), and this team has outlined all of the expenses (uniforms, sweats, camps, meet fees, overnight trips, coaching, etc.) and the total expense for a team of 50 runners is $25,450. That is $509 per runner.

Just Google “Cross Country Fundraising Ideas” and you are immediately hit with the usual suspects… How would you like to be going door-to-door selling…

  • “Frozen Cookie Dough Tubs” (2 pounds for $10? Makes my arteries constrict just thinking about it).
  • “Flower Bulbs” (I do enough yard work already. These would just sit in a drawer for the next 10 years).
  • “Candle Sales” (I don’t want to see a candle unless the power goes out).

Not only would these be humiliating for a High School Athlete to peddle door-to-door, they are only purchased out of pity. Nobody really wants any of this junk. On top of that, there is no awareness created by these products after the sale.

You know where I’m going with this, right?
