Hey, it’s July and your new PTA/PTO Board will soon be having their first meeting.

The first get-together is going to be the meeting with the greatest attendance. So it makes sense to have your “merchandise” fundraiser available to sell at this first meeting. If you’re like many of the progressive, forward thinking schools, you have already bought car magnets from ARC Marketing and you will probably sell out at this first meeting.

If your school is forward thinking and progressive and you still haven’t had our Art Department start working on your magnet design, there is probably still time! Our team of expert designers can usually get your initial design done in a day or two, and then still have time for the revisions that you will ask for.

Production time usually takes about 2 weeks, plus a few days for UPS delivery. Therefore, even with all your procrastinating, you can still probably have your custom car magnets before the first day of school.

Why is the first meeting and the first day of school so important to your fundraiser? This is the time when most parents are engaged in school activities. Enthusiasm starts to dwindle after the first week or so, and you want to catch these parents while they’re still caught up in the “Back to School” hysteria. Round Car Magnets or Oval Car Magnets?

Here we go. Another “either or” argument. Follows the other age-old major decisions like “boxers or briefs”, and “paper or plastic”.

Well, it’s one of the most polarizing topics in this very polarizing time. Let’s get into the weeds and determine which is better… round car magnets or oval car magnets.

To begin with, both the oval and round magnets are the most durable shapes. They both offer a single, continuous edge with no sharp corners that can wear over time. Square magnets and intricate die-cut magnets (we make those also) have sharp corners that can start to fray over time, which can lead to the magnetic material failing (doesn’t happen often, but the potential is there). And by “over time”, we mean several years so don’t be too worried.

Our standard round car magnet is a 5-inch circle. Normally we put your logo, mascot or other graphic into the center. We try to make the “center” of the magnet a 4-inch circle, leaving a half-inch border for text.

Our standard oval car magnet is 6 inches long and 4 inches tall. Again, we will put your logo or other graphic in the center. The center of both magnets is where your eye is drawn toward, so the most impactful part of your magnet should go there.

We like to make the type as large as possible without running into kerning or spacing issues. We want the type to be a strong contrasting color to the border color so that it stands out and can be legible from the car behind you at the stop light.

The oval magnet works better for linear logos (logos that are wider than they are tall) since this shape offers more room from left to right. The oval magnet works better also for designs that have a lot of words. You can fit more words on the top and bottom arc of the oval magnet because the curve of the arc is more subtle. On the round magnet, longer phrases tend to invert slightly when they reach the midpoint (9 and 3 o’clock).

I realize that none of this really settles the argument of Round vs. Oval magnets, but it might help you decide on the best shape for your magnet.

Yeah, we do that. We make fundraising car magnets for every conceivable sport, and youth soccer is at the top of the list.

I’m not sure of the official statistics, but soccer might just be the most participated youth sport in America (feel free to correct me on that if I’m wrong!). But based on the orders we get from soccer clubs, they sure buy more magnets. Maybe the parents are just more engaged in soccer programs than the parents of other sports.

Full Disclosure… Youth Baseball is a very close second.

Fundraising: We have several Youth Soccer Leagues that buy 1,000 magnets each season, and they sell them for about $6 each. I’m not sure who trains the magnet designers at some of the other car magnet companies, but just look at the magnets shown on their websites. “Childish” and “Cartoonish” are two thoughts that come to mind. Your young soccer stars have a more mature vision of their soccer league and want their magnets to look like something a professional soccer team would design.
